Vinyl flooring: professional's advices

Home renovation projects that include flooring are particularly stressful because of all of the work it takes to find the right products that are easy to maintain over time. Value, safety and appearance are all concerns when considering applications like vinyl flooring. NYCeiling team works on many projects and collects information that is vital and very importnat to know for homeowners and contractors. In this article we share information on vinyl flooring written by Brian Turner.

Cleaning the floor

After a kitchen or bathroom remodel, the vinyl flooring tiles may need to be cleaned to restore it to its original appearance. Low abrasion pads should always be used when cleaning the floors. A hard wax surface is an ideal condition for using the dry buffing method. Buffing equipment should be used on a 300 RPM setting.

Vinyl flooring and resealing

Vinyl flooring needs to be resealed regularly. Over time the sealant can wear down. When the sealant wears down, the appearance of the floor becomes dull. The scuffing becomes more prevalent and the floor begins to easily attract dirt. Sealers are applied to vinyl flooring to repel the dirt from the surface.

Another important function of the sealant is that it prevents liquid from seeping into the vinyl. Sealing can last for quite some time if the floors are polished periodically. Once the sealing begins to fade, the sealant should be applied.

Vinyl flooring and polishing

Before any polishing project is started, the floors should be properly cleaned. The dirt can sometimes become trapped within the polish if this is not done. A polish provides another added layer of protection against dirt. This is used to extend the life of the floor and create value for the homeowner.

When adding polish to the floor, the coats should be thin. With each layer of polish applied to the floor, the coats should be even. Adding too many coats can create streaks in the flooring; experts recommend no more than three coats.

Install the floor

Installing vinyl flooring is the hardest type of home renovation project. The baseboards and cabinets should be removed when possible. The surface of the floor has to be smooth and free of any cracks. Floors that are distressed may require an underlayment of some sort.

Once the floor is swept, the measurements of the room must be taken. The vinyl tiling installation process should start at the center of the room and be done in small increments. The seams of the vinyl floors should be strategically placed in low traffic areas that aren’t as visible whenever possible. Each tile should be placed as close as possible to the other tiles so that the tiles remain in place for a long time and the area surrounding the tile isn’t visible.

Risks and vinyl flooring

Vinyl flooring containing asbestos is one of the most controversial topics in home improvement. Its use in homes for flooring has been tied to autism in young children, and respiratory problems related to asbestos exposure. There are many in the home improvement industry that believe it to be safe if properly maintained and promptly replaced when it begins to age.

Some argue that the risks are more of problem for those who don’t know how to maintain it.

As with any other type of flooring, the quality of the home renovation project starts with the product and how it is installed. The durability of the flooring is tied to the workmanship.
